She told the makers at Sawkille, who she had worked with before, that she wanted a cupboard with a bleached maple finish for freshness and details reminiscent of their coastal community without being kitschy. It’s hard to trade Charleston, but I could see having a little spot in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood of Paris for two or three months. I don’t want to have a home there, I just want to immerse myself in the culture and community for more than a week or ten days.

I love to blend a laid-back, bohemian vibe with strong architectural elements. Organic shapes inspire me, and creating asymmetry is key because it adds an intriguing dimension to my design. I strive to establish a strong connection between the interiors, the architecture, the location, and the surrounding views. By playing off the materiality of the space, we create a cohesive and relaxing experience for anyone who walks through the doors of the homes, hotels, or restaurants we design.
Family Room
I talked to some people who knew mills that were good at printing on linens, but nobody knew how to do wovens, or where I would go to find a weaver. It seemed like I would have to travel, possibly even out of the U.S., to really get down and dirty and understand it. And so it was just this dream that was out there.
Interior Design
I can also go ahead and pull the trigger on beautiful, unique pieces that are reasonably priced—quilts and bedding and beautiful textiles—the things you might not find at the last minute. We enjoy buying pottery from our vintage dealers. We probably install 15 to 20 pieces in every home, but we don’t specify it until we install. I love that your team has stayed with you for so long. How have you cultivated that, and how did you know when it was time to grow? I never could have been an interior designer on my own.
Viva La Vintage

I always knew if I ever did a collaboration, it would be in textiles. When we lived in England, my father would take me with him to Holland & Sherry, where he had his suits made. Three months after my father passed away, I got a call from Bryan Dicker, president of the company. He was going to be in Charleston and wanted to come by and thank me for the business I’d given them over the years. We met, and the collection went into production eight months later.
Invest in the photography every time you can, because you only get the opportunity to really shoot something one time before they live in it, right? To have her as a partner in building the business, and later in building social media, has been great for us. For me, it’s about putting out a quality interior design shot every day and trying to be a little lighthearted about it—but showing the work consistently. We really do try to do one post a day; that’s the expectation that I hold for myself. Though it’s starting to get a little more complicated ... Do you still feel like an outlier in the Charleston design vernacular, or has the look and feel of the city caught up?
This Charleston Designer Likes to Break the Rules of Southern Style
There’s nothing worse than having four storage units with furniture stacked up to the ceiling, where you don’t know what you have and there are lamp parts everywhere. I feel like we’re all reassessing what our boundaries and limits are right now.Absolutely. I’m grateful for the workload, and for the opportunities that we’ve received throughout this pandemic, but I’m also almost scared to choose what my next year is going to look like. The one thing I’ve decided is that we’re not going to travel to other locations for a home build or a commercial project unless it’s with one of our tried-and-true partners—someone who understands how we work. I enjoyed building the business almost as much as the work itself—strategically thinking about how to grow a brand was so exciting to me. The outreach part felt like it always came naturally.
They might change the pillows or the wallcovering in 10 years but the overall home should be one that survives through all the trends. Sustainability is key, so quality is really important. One senses that the primary objective is the subliminal energy of each room, underscored by an intrinsic awareness of connection with location. CBD is also working with local Charleston developers on the holistic design of luxury oceanfront condominiums, cottages and a new Beach Club on Kiawah called The Cape, infusing the iconic Kiawah aesthetic with modern luxury. The Cape development is set to be completed before Fall 2024. Fresh eyes on your own furnishings can feel like a whole new space.
It was one of those projects that I learned so much from - a “throw yourself into the fire” kind of opportunity. Next on the horizon is my new e-commerce platform, Album. As a designer, I see it as a means of creative expression that lets me explore uncharted territories beyond the confines of our firm’s project work, blending the realms of design and music. For many years now my truest dream project is a home for my family on the marsh in Johns Island, SC, I call it my river house and have been developing ideas and buying beautiful pieces for it over the past five years.

One features a fish, representing how her husband is an avid fly fisherman. The custom cupboard by Sawkille that features the family’s namesake and acts as a pantry. November 7, 2021Gnarly — meaning, in the surf-culture sense of the term, cool or impressive — isn’t a word you expect to hear from a prominent interior designer born and raised in the South.
It’s a communal space so there has to be ample room for the household to work, study, hang out, cook and dine! Banquettes to maximize kitchen seating and game tables are both hot requests for sure. A self-proclaimed "tried and true antique hunter," Cortney is always scouring Chairish for those pieces that ooze character. And when she sees something she likes, she goes for it.
